Formulation Philosophy
Our formulation philosophy is to create products that are as “clean” as possible; while ensuring they remain effective, safe and have minimal impact on the environment. We use sustainably sourced, biodegradable ingredients, the majority of which are of natural origin.
our shade of clean
The term “clean” is often used interchangeably with “natural” or “of natural origin.” However, these terms are not legally regulated, and their definitions can vary widely—often depending on what a brand chooses to claim or how a consumer interprets them. With so many different types of “natural” products on the market and no universally agreed-upon definition, it can become confusing.
To bring more clarity and transparency, independent organisations like the Soil Association, Ecocert, and COSMOS have developed their own standards for evaluating ingredients based on sustainability and safety criteria.
To simplify things for ourselves and our customers, we’ve chosen to use the Ecocert and COSMOS standards as a reference when selecting ingredients, with the aim of choosing ingredients that are consistent with their approach to natural and responsible formulation.
Most of our ingredients are of natural origin, with a small number of carefully selected synthetic ingredients.
ingredients of natural origin
The Ecocert standard defines “natural origin” as “ingredients that are of plant, mineral, animal or marine origin.” Of these we only use ingredients that are plant and mineral based. The standard further considers any ingredient, fully or partially stemming from a petrochemical origin as having a “synthetic origin”.
We consider more than 99% of the ingredients we use (by weight) to be of natural origin, with the remaining ingredients being of synthetic origin, in accordance with the definitions and classifications used by the COSMOS and Ecocert standards.
To be safe our products contain preservatives (less than 1%), and these are of synthetic origin, which have been approved by these standards for use in natural formulations.
Benzyl Alcohol can be of either natural or synthetic origin. It occurs naturally in plants and is found in the essential oils of flowers such as ylang ylang and jasmine. However, when used as a preservative, it is most commonly produced synthetically to ensure consistency, purity and availability.
Benzyl Alcohol forms part of our broad-spectrum natural preservative system. It is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, while also providing some activity against Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and mould.
It also has other useful functions within our formulations, including helping to minimise oxidative degradation, dissolving certain ingredients and reducing viscosity to help formulations flow more easily.
A non-ionic surfactant made from renewable raw materials, primarily coconut oil and glucose. It’s highly effective at lifting dirt and oils and works as a reliable solubilizer, helping essential oils mix evenly and stay stable in the formula.
A naturally occurring acid found in citrus fruits. It helps adjust and stabilise pH, while also helping to dissolve limescale and mineral deposits for improved cleaning performance.
A gentle, non-ionic surfactant derived from sugar and coconut. It creates a soft foam and helps lift away grease and grime in our Washing-Up Liquid.
A synthetic preservative that helps prevent the growth of microorganisms such as fungi and certain bacteria. It is effective in formulations with a neutral pH and is used in very small amounts to help maintain product stability, freshness and safety.
Distilled water is purified water where contaminants such as dissolved minerals, salts, heavy metals and other impurities are removed in order to maximize shelf life of the finished product and improve cleaning power. We use it as a clean base for dissolving and blending ingredients.
A highly purified, food-grade ethanol produced by fermenting grains and carefully distilling the resulting alcohol to achieve a clean, neutral ingredient.
With its strong solvent properties, it assists dissolving grease and other residues, while its fast evaporation leaves glass and other surfaces clean and streak-free.
A multifunctional ingredient derived from rapeseed and coconut, it helps condition and stabilise the formulation while also supporting preservation by helping to inhibit microbial growth in our Washing-Up Liquid.
A mild anionic surfactant predominantly derived from plant-based sources such as coconut oil and fermented sugar. It provides effective cleansing while being gentle on the skin. It also helps soften hard water by binding minerals that can interfere with cleaning performance. We use it in our All-Purpose Cleaner to effectively lift away dirt, grease and residue, leaving surfaces clean without harshness.
Commonly known as salt, a mineral used to naturally increase the thickness of our Washing-Up Liquid. By adjusting viscosity, it helps create a richer, more stable texture without synthetic thickeners.
A salt of citric acid that helps maintain a stable pH, supporting the formulation’s stability and effectiveness. It also helps soften water by binding minerals that can interfere with cleaning, allowing surfactants to work more effectively.
An anionic surfactant derived from coconut and palm oils, offering excellent cleansing and foaming properties. It creates a rich, stable foam that effectively cuts through grease in our Washing-Up Liquid.
We use Sodium Coco Sulfate as it is not derived from fossil fuels and it is not ethnoxylated. It is commonly used as a plant-based alternative to SLS and SLES, which often are derived from fossil fuels. In addition, SLES is an *ethoxylated ingredient.
*Ethoxylated ingredients may raise health concerns because some manufacturing processes can leave trace contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, which are suggested to be associated with potential carcinogenic and other toxic effects.
Sodium Gluconate is a naturally derived ingredient produced through the fermentation of glucose. This is an alternative to synthetic chelating agents such as EDTA and it is readily biodegradable, breaking down much more easily in the environment than EDTA.
As a chelating agent, it binds minerals in hard water that can interfere with cleaning, helping to improve performance and reduce the formation of water spots. It also helps maintain a stable pH in the formulation.
Sodium phytate is derived from plants, specifically from phytic acid (phytate) naturally present in seeds and grains, then converted into its sodium salt- sodium phytate.
It is a chelating agent that helps improve cleaning performance in mineral-rich water and it is part of our wider preservation system. It binds metal ions making it is less favourable to microbial growth while supporting the effectiveness of our other preservative ingredients.
A multifunctional ingredient derived from sugarcane and corn by-products, making use of renewable plant-based materials left over from food production, rather than using crops grown specifically for this purpose.
We use it primarily to enhance the grease-cutting performance of our All-Purpose Cleaner, while also helping to disperse essential oils evenly throughout the formulation.
A bio-derived acid produced from corn-based renewable feedstock. We use it in our Glass & Window Cleaner to dissolve limescale, water spots and other mineral deposits, while also helping to remove alkaline residues. Its mild acidity supports effective cleaning and helps leave glass clean and clear.
